Functional Movement Training

As part of your Myotherapy treatment we get you moving.

The first goal of treatment is to reduce and ultimately eradicate your pain, and believe it or not one of the most effective tools at our disposal is movement. Research shows us that movement and exercise are very helpful in reducing pain and improving function for people with musculoskeletal pain. Even with medical conditions like osteoporosis or in people who have had surgery for back pain, movement and exercise will form a key component of your recovery.

It’s about finding the right type and dose of movement, motor control and strength thats relevant to YOUR SITUATION. That’s why it’s functional. You could also call it practical, useful or relevant. Functional will be defined differently for an elite runner compared to a brick layer or a casual gym goer.

Improving function (e.g. your ability to engage in daily household tasks, work, sport and socialising etc.) through movement and exercise has profound beneficial ‘flow-on’ effects, including reduced disability, reduced depression, improved physical conditioning and increased quality of life.

Type the words functional movement or functional strength into google and you’re going to come up with some weird and wonderful images. Many of them not all that functional either, unless you require the ability to stand on a ball, whilst rubbing your tummy, patting your head and reciting Pi to the thousandth digit (impressive… but not functional).

Impressive, YES! But probably not very functional.

Impressive… YES. Functional… probably NOT!

Functional is definitely a health and fitness buzzword at the moment, and not one that’s used very well or (can be) clearly defined. But when applied correctly it sums up what we do at The Musculoskeletal Co. nicely.

So what do we do…

It’s about finding the right type and dose of movement, motor control and strength thats relevant to YOUR SITUATION. That’s why it’s functional. You could also call it practical, useful or relevant. Passive treatment techniques can have a fantastic effect of decreasing pain and sensitivity. It’s important to remember however, that any therapist derived treatment technique is going to have a temporary effect, it calms your affected area down, opening a window of opportunity to move without or with less pain. It’s how we take advantage of that opening that makes the lasting change for you.

We use barbells, kettle bells, medicine balls, weights, gymnastics rings, footballs and a wide variety of other tools. We place an emphasis on natural human movement too; rolling, crawling, walking, running, jumping, hanging, climbing and the list goes on.

We have an active approach to improving your health and all components of related physical fitness. We want to educate, inspire and motivate you to take ownership and accountability for your health and wellbeing. We don’t ‘fix’ you; that’s your job. It’s your body and your health; we’re here to help provide the right environment.

The added bonus of using movement to influence your pain is that you are also creating changes in your body that will last far, far longer than the effects of ANY manual therapy.
